- Many vulnerable American adults with comorbidities lack knowledge about the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic; nearly one in 3 adults could not identify the symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection or the adequate ways to prevent it.
- Many psychosocial health determinants seem to be responsible for noted disparities concerning knowledge and response towards the pandemic :
- Age
- Race/ethnicity
- Socioeconomic status
- Level of health literacy
- Adults with low health literacy had a greater confidence in the government’s response to the outbreak.
- Knowledge and response disparities among the population suggest that public health measure efforts may need to be increased in vulnerable communities.
- Children’s hand-washing and mask-wearing behaviors are influenced by their sex, their age, their father’s occupation and their mother’s educational background.
The data comes from 2 cross-sectional surveys. The first study regroups 630 patient, aged from 23 to 88 years, and were recruited to answer a series of questions by telephone on diverse subjects pertaining to the pandemic. Participants were recruited from March 13, 2020 to March 20, 2020 in the United-States, and their answers were recorded and analyzed. The goal was to determine how certain health determinants might impact their knowledge and their perception of the pandemic and how that might have impacted their lives and daily routines. The second cross-sectional surveys was conducted in Wuhan, China, from 16 February 2020 to 25 February 2020 with 8,569 primary students from 15 different schools. Participants were aged from 6 to 13 years of age. The surveys evaluates hand hygiene and mask-wearing behavior among that population, as well as their sociodemographic characteristics.
